Bridging the Digital Divide Through AR Design

This project aims to create a supportive environment that allows students to study in a digital environment using AR design.

Based on the three findings acquired through the research process, this project focuses on easing the digital divide in South Korea, with a strong emphasis on enhancing student education engagement.

MOTIVATION

As a college student who experienced the South Korea educational curriculum, I wanted to find out the main cause of educational inequalities in South Korea, and provide a comprehensive solution.


In ‘International Development Studies 110’ class, I was assigned to research the topic related to global issues that I am interested in. I decided to research the problem of educational inequality in South Korea.

Found articles to understand the current educational inequalities in South Korea

RESEARCH FINDINGS

  1. Private education in Korea is the beginning of the educational inequality in Korea

  2. The varying quality of online classes after COVID-19 worsened the educational inequality in Korea

  3. The South Korean government started to provide free digital device rental service to students in response to the deepened digital divide following the COVID-19 pandemic

DESIGN SOLUTION

Using AR design, I aimed to enhance students' educational opportunities, with the ultimate goal of reducing inequality stemming from the digital divide.

Text and Image Recognition

  • Provide a specific explanation when student place their tablet over a textbook image.

  • Provide a specific explanation of the word when student place their tablet on the word that they don’t know.

Review and Preview

  • Help students prepare for classes by providing reading materials

  • Review class content through quizzes

  • Helps students memorize keywords and class content

  • Improve student’s understanding by offering friendly, storytelling-style explanations of answers

Organize Lecture and Note Taking

  • Organize the teacher's notes on the tablet to make it easier to understand

  • Use AI to summarize lectures or assist with note-taking

  • Record lectures and organize notes, including translations for international students

DELIVERABLE

For the final deliverable, I designed a poster to show the research process and design solution focusing on enhancing student’s educational opportunities.

REFLECTION

It was meaningful to organize the recent problems of the educational environment that I experienced into three findings and to provide a solution with AR design, relating them with a digital solution
